How to Choose the Right Nicotine Strength
5 min read · Updated November 6, 2026
Picking the wrong strength is the most common reason a new setup disappoints: too strong feels harsh and headachy, too weak leaves you puffing constantly and still craving. The right choice depends on three things together - what you smoked, which device you use, and whether the liquid is salt or freebase.
Start with the device, not just the craving
Strength only makes sense together with power. A 20mg liquid in a small pod kit delivers nicotine gently, puff by puff. The same 20mg in a high-wattage sub-ohm mod would be overwhelming, because the device produces far more vapour per draw. That is why pod kits pair with higher strengths and mods pair with lower ones - match the bottle to the hardware first.
Salt and freebase strengths are not interchangeable
Nicotine salt is formulated to stay smooth at high strength, which is why most salt liquids are 20mg/mL, with some lines offering lower options. Freebase nicotine, the original form, is usually sold at 3mg, 6mg or 12mg/mL and has a stronger throat hit at the same number. A 20mg salt and a hypothetical 20mg freebase would feel completely different - compare within a type, not across types.
A practical starting ladder
People switching from a pack a day usually start with 20mg salt liquid in a pod kit. Half a pack a day points to 12-20mg salt, or 6-12mg freebase in a starter device. Light or occasional smokers often find 3-6mg plenty, especially in anything more powerful than a basic pod kit. Treat these as starting points: give a strength about a week, then adjust one step at a time rather than jumping around daily.
Too strong, too weak: read the signs
Too strong: headache, light dizziness, nausea, or a harsh peppery hit. Slow down, take shorter draws, and step down a level if it keeps happening. Too weak: you vape almost constantly, finish pods suspiciously fast, or still crave a cigarette shortly after vaping. Step up a level, or check that your liquid type matches your device - salts in a low-power pod kit satisfy far better than freebase at the same strength.
The Canadian 20mg rule
Since 2021, federal rules cap nicotine in vaping products sold in Canada at 20mg/mL. The 35mg and 50mg products in American videos are not legal for sale here, and any shop offering them is not selling compliant Canadian stock. Everything on our shelves follows the federal cap, and every product page states its strength.
